Kingsville Academy 1835-1872
The Kingsville Academy was formed by a group of shareholders to operate
as a school for higher learning (Grades 7-12).
The Academy was tuition based and students enrolled for a term, Fall,
Winter or Spring. They were not required to attend consecutive terms
to graduate. The use of the building was "leased" to the
superintendents to conduct the Academy as directed by the shareholders.
Students were boarded in nearby homes during the week, returning to their
own homes, if in the area, during weekends. Those from long
distances boarded in homes for the full term.
The first building in which the Academy was housed was a two story wood
frame building located at the south end of the school lot on the East side
of Academy Street, across from the park. The original building was
destroyed by fire in 1847 and was rebuilt as a slightly larger wood frame
building on the same site. That building was turned over to
Kingsville Township to become Kingsville Public School in 1872 when the
Academy could no longer operate due to loss of enrollment and teachers
caused in part by the Civil War. The public high school became
overcrowded as the district one-room school houses were closed. A
new two story brick building was
built at the north end of the same lot by 1884. |
